The festival of Kajari Teej has great importance in Indian Sanatan culture, especially for married women. Named by various other names like Kajli Teej, Budhi Teej, and Satudi Teej, this festival is celebrated on the third day of the waning moon in Bhadrapada month. The motive of this fast is to perform prayer prays the long life of her husband and her marriage life full of happiness. Women are allowed to play traditional songs, dance, swing on decorated swings and express themselves in soulful Kajri songs. The festival is filled with culture and is celebrated with mirth in most parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where it is a family celebration.

The Mythological Story of Kajari Teej

Teej Kajari Teej is not a festival of fasts and rituals, but it dynamically narrates the holy efforts of Goddess Parvati who was able to impress Lord Shiva with her determination, love, and spiritual power. Just like Savitri who brought her husband Satyavan back from Yama, in Kajari Teej we remember the determination and great penance performed by Parvati to win Lord Shiva as her consort. The origin of this vrat speaks of an age-old true fact that it is the faith, sacrifice, and dedication of a woman that can implore blessings, prosperity, and happiness to life. Women sit on a fast this day and worship Lord Shiva,Goddess Parvati, and the Moon for the long lives and good health of their husbands besides harmony in their married lives. This festival is a symbol of a woman’s devotion to her husband, emotional depth, and spiritual dedication.

Worship method Ritual of Vrat Begins

Fast Start

· Women start preparations from the night of 11th August. 

· In the morning, sattu is prepared by mixing barley, gram, wheat, rice. It is consumed only after the fast has been respectfully broken. 

Puja Material

· A tiny pond-shaped space is crafted near the wall using cow dung and soil, lined with jaggery and ghee, and a sacred neem stick is planted close by.  

· It is offered raw milk, water, diya, roli, akshat, mauli, mehendi, kajal, aroma etc. 

Method of Worship:

1. Worshiping the Goddess: Offer roli rice, and put bindi marks with hands on the wall: 

· Ring finger is used to apply mehendi, roli, and bindi as part of the sacred tradition. 

· Kajal bindi is applied with index finger.  

2. Clothes, fruits, and flowers are offered. 

3. Roli, tika and laccha are secured. 

4. Kajari songs are also sung as the swing is being played in the evening. 

5. The fast is opened when the moon is sighted. 

Method of opening the fast:

· If there is a fast without water and food, then the fast is broken after moon sighting. 

· Pregnant women or women who are unable to fast due to health reasons can eat fruits. 

What are the rules and precautions?

What to do:

· Fast with complete devotion in mind, word and deed. 

· Put a neem twig on the platform made of cow dung on the wall of the house and worship it with reverence. 

· Use milk and curd. 

· Wear clean, green clothes on the day of the fast. 

· Married women should wear her dresses. 

· Let the celebration come alive with the charm of Kajri songs and the delight of decorated swings swaying in rhythm.  

· With a devoted heart and fasting spirit, bow to the Moon and seek its blessings. 

What not to do:

· Worship is prohibited during Rahukaal, so choose the auspicious time. 

· Do not wear wet clothes. 

· Do not argue or get angry with anyone. 

· Maintain purity and simplicity in thoughts, food, and actions throughout the day of the fast.  

· Make sure to follow the Nirjala fast with complete discipline—don’t eat or drink throughout the vow. 

· Fasting should not be done without offering Arghya. 

· Use brass, clay or copper utensils in worship.

The fast of Kajari Teej was first performed by Mata Parvati with strong will power and hard penance to get Lord Shiva. That is why this fast is still considered a symbol of faith and love for women. In the worship ritual, devotees offer roli and kajal, apply a tilak using Akshat (unbroken rice), and present milk along with fruits as a mark of devotion. It is these simple yet powerful mantras that attract the grace of the mother.
